On September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state. It is famous for the gold rush and the Golden State Bridge. Its capitol is Sacramento. California is the most populous state boasting over 37 million inhabitants in 2010; sending 53 representatives to Congress.

The history of California dates back to the arrival of indigenous peoples thousands of years ago. The first European to reach California was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542.
